Garden Visits |
The Sunset Western Garden Book designates our neighborhood as Zone 22. This means that we are closely aligned with the Southern California coastal climate and influenced by the ocean approximately 85 percent of the time. A careful observation of the tall Deodar Cedars shows that they are wind pruned by the prevailing air current which comes from the west over Forest Lawn Cemetary. This is the reason we are often 5-10 degrees cooler on a summer's day than downtown and northern Glendale. Another benefit is that we have less smog build up. In protected areas, the microclimate is subtropical and plants like bananas, gingers and tree ferns will grow. The winters are mild and we rarely have a hard freeze. Conversely, plants that require a cold snap do not thrive here. The gardens of the neighborhood reflect the diversity and interests of the people who live in Adams Hill. We are fortunate that we have so many plants that will do well in our yards and gardens. In this section, different gardens and gardeners will be highlighted thoughout the year. if you would like to be featured or would like to nominate your neighbor please contact Nick Macierz at 1323 Oberlin Drive or see him at one of the general meetings. |
